5th Feb 2026 Update // The countdown has well and truly begun.

This is an election year, and on 7 November we will all have the chance to decide who governs the country. Historically, the lead-up to an election brings a mix of challenges and opportunities for business.

On the positive side, there is often an increase in government spending, which can help stimulate the economy. After several very tough years, many business owners will be hoping this provides a much-needed lift as we move through the rest of the year.

At the same time, election years can create hesitation. People often delay decisions because they are unsure what lies ahead. For businesses, that raises an important question. How do you encourage customers to act now, and what makes your offer compelling enough to tip them from thinking into doing?

There are a few other countdowns underway as well. One Mahurangi will shortly be announcing my replacement. I am looking forward to working alongside them to ensure a smooth handover and then watching from the sidelines as our town continues to thrive.

My retirement date has also been brought forward to Friday, 13 March. This gives me a little extra time to prepare for our wedding on 4 April, which is coming around very quickly.

You will also have seen communications yesterday about an upcoming Special General Meeting. There is no cause for concern. The purpose of this meeting is to ensure our constitution fully meets the requirements of the new Incorporated Societies Act. If this is not approved by members and lodged before 6 April, we would not be able to continue operating. So it’s important we see you there if you can make it. Please RSVP lauren@onemahurangi.co.nz

The meeting itself should be straightforward, and I encourage you to come along, have your say, and then stay on for a drink or a meal and some time catching up with other members. It is a good chance to reconnect, and it will be one of the last One Mahurangi events I attend in this role.

So the countdown is on. What will it mean for you and your business?
