I keep getting asked how I feel about retiring and the honest answer is this. While my body is ready, my mind and heart are not quite there yet.
One Mahurangi has been a big part of my life for a long time and it will feel very strange not being in the middle of things here in our town. I am not disappearing though. I will still be around and involved in different ways, just not in the same role.
Between now and 13 March there is still plenty to get through. We have ongoing conversations with Auckland Transport about the issues many of you talk to us about, including parking and traffic in Glenmore Drive, the pedestrian lights on Woodcocks Road, and the safety concerns in the centre of town. We will also be raising the safety of the Falls Road crossing during flooding.
Hill Street has not been forgotten. Even if it feels quiet on the surface, we are still in discussion with NZTA and Councillor Greg Sayers about how to get it back onto the work programme and moving again. A lot of this work happens in the background until there is something solid to report.
Our Special General Meeting is on 25 February. These meetings are not always thrilling, but they are important. I would encourage you to come along, then stay on afterwards, enjoy a meal at the Bridgehouse, and use it as a chance to catch up with other members. It is a good way to mix business with networking.
On 4 March, we are running a Social Media Workshop. If you find it hard to keep on top of social media, this will be practical and worthwhile. If it is not your thing, think about sending one of your team. Anything that helps you communicate better with your customers is time well spent.
We will be announcing my replacement soon. I am very comfortable with the choice and will do everything I can to make the handover as smooth as possible.
As you head into another busy week, remember that running a business is always easier when we support and encourage one another.
Stronger together.
