19th Dec 2024 Update // Finishing the year on a high!

Just like that, another year has come to a close.

Standing on Queen Street during Santa Parade Day, surrounded by thousands of families enjoying the 43 creative floats, I was reminded of what makes this community so special. It was the largest parade yet—an incredible showcase of creativity, teamwork, and the shared spirit of Warkworth. What a way to cap off 2024. [Scroll down to see photos]

As the year ends, it’s natural to reflect on the highs and lows. Like many of you, we’ve experienced losses but also gained new connections that will shape the years to come. At One Mahurangi, this year’s defining chapter was undoubtedly our battle with Watercare—a four-year journey that, at times, felt like an uphill climb.

Thanks to the incredible support of our community, including over 4,000 signatures on our petition, we achieved a breakthrough. With a new approach from Watercare’s leadership, collaborative engineering discussions, and last week’s decisive agreement from their Board, we’ve protected the heart of Warkworth. The alternative could have meant losing 90% of businesses in the town centre. This is a triumph not just for our businesses, but for the entire community—a true Christmas gift for Warkworth.

Looking ahead, the work continues. Next year, we’ll remain focused on minimising disruption during infrastructure projects, advocating for progress on Hill Street, ensuring thoughtful development that preserves the town’s character, and supporting businesses across the district. The challenges are ongoing, but so is our commitment.

I’d like to thank everyone who engaged with us this year, whether through a quick chat on the street, an email, or a phone call. Your input is invaluable. My heartfelt thanks also go to our incredible Operations team—Lauren, Alison, and Claire—along with the staff, volunteers, and sponsors who make it all possible. Special thanks to our Co-Chairs, Dave Stott and Bevan Morrison, and our committee for their ongoing support.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a New Year filled with promise. It’s been a big year, and we’ve navigated it together because, as we always say: We are Stronger Together.
