16th Feb 2023 UPDATE | Business Support in the wake of the cyclone

Summer?! What summer?

As I sit in my Warkworth office and look out at what is now a bright sunny day, I reflect back on the last few weeks and the weather events that have brought not just our town, but nearly the whole country, to a standstill.

What these events should remind us of is the huge amount of work done by our emergency services, our local contractors, and power companies who all continued to work out there in horrendous, very dangerous conditions.

We saw during the flooding how quickly our local contractors, Rhodes for Roads, Mason Contractors, and Wharehine were out there clearing major slips away, making sure the roads were safe and clear for travel. Local volunteers got stuck in wherever they could too and the community really pulled together to lend support to the stranded and to take care of the vulnerable. I know of families that opened their homes and also a number of locals who turned up to assist at the Warkworth Town Hall and the RSA. It shows the heart of our community is alive and well. Once again these events make me proud to see how quickly our locals stepped up and pitched in to help those in need. We really are Stronger Together.

The big question now is how can we assist our local businesses to spring back to life after the impact of the cyclone and floods? I believe the best we can do as customers are to keep frequenting and supporting these businesses. Be patient and kind as service maybe take a little longer and the staff themselves may be dealing with flooding, transportation, and communication issues at home. We are all in this recovery together so keep being generous with your kindness, appreciation, and support.

It has been pleasant to walk around town with the sun out and the town buzzing with visitors again. I keep reminding myself that summer hasn’t officially finished yet! The customers and tourists will keep coming and we can all take a deep sigh of relief and enjoy the sunshine. Long may it last!
